Hi!! I see you post occasionally about cdramas. I went to China this summer and I learned a little Mandarin (like enough to say, “I don’t speak good Mandarin.”) Would I be able to muddle through cdramas with captions? (Also any suggestions on which ones to watch and where to watch them?). Thanks so much <3

ooh i hope you had lots of fun there! with subtitles i think you could absolutely make it through most cdramas; it depends on how good the subs are, honestly, because alas translating mandarin chinese to english (or any latin-based language, for that matter) is i think one of the most difficult language translations possible because the chinese language is just so rife with chengyu (idioms).

as for recs, i do have a handful i watched recently enough that i feel more confident in trusting my own taste LOL. i almost exclusively watch historical dramas, so these are definitely going to be very skewed to my personal preferences.

also, this will be long because i love my cdramas. bear with me!

word of honor/山河令 (2021)

episodes: 36

genre: wuxia (chinese martial arts fantasy; think of crouching tiger hidden dragon), dangai (cdrama adapted from a chinese gay romance novel), adventure, political intrigue

arguably the most explicitly gay cdrama that's come out in the last decade despite censorship issues in chinese tv broadcasting

a lonely ex-assassin retires and begins a slow 1-year suicide by poison, but his death plan is interrupted by a flirtatious (& dangerous) man with a mysterious background + a newly orphaned kid he accidentally becomes responsible for. cue politics and drama!

if you don't mind dealing with low-budget CGI—though the show is so immersive it hardly makes a difference—the story features: fascinating & subversive themes about life & morality, a well-written cast of bloodthirsty women, an incredibly charming found family, and an absolutely fantastic, dramatic, devoted slow burn between the two male leads

if you prefer more mature romance—lots of flirting & sexual tension between two highly intelligent & capable men who are 1) attracted to each other from the get-go 2) constantly trying to outmaneuver each other & figure each other out... this is the one!

if it means anything, i am recommending this one first because it's my all-time favorite cdrama! especially if you are queer like me :)

episodes: 40

genre: historical, romance, political intrigue

if you too are tired of stories about shallow, badly-written girlbosses with no dimension... this is the show for you!

protagonist is a happy woman who gets framed for adultery & buried alive by her husband—she survives and returns to enact revenge upon those who hurt her & her loved ones by assuming the identity of the young woman who died saving her. she makes many enemies and allies along the way + catches the attention of the emperor's notoriously cold & keen-eyed right hand man, duke su, who eventually becomes her very supportive love interest <3

high stakes & a plot that makes you hold your breath, GORGEOUS cinematography

a long list of complex and important female characters, most of them nasty and corrupt, all of them sympathetic and interesting. the show is good at making you assume at first that their characters won't be done justice, but just wait :)

from your resident het romance skeptic: excellent dynamic! protagonist and her duke are both confident, calculating schemers always trying to outsmart each other, but eventually join hands against common enemies. extremely slow burn with lots of tension and a refreshing lack of miscommunication

genre: wuxia, adventure, mystery

a heroic & famous swordsman suffers a defeat at the hands of his nemesis and vanishes and is widely presumed dead. timeskip a decade, he's been living in disguise as a doctor to escape the burden of his identity when the past he's been hiding from starts to catch up to him when he scams a talented & stubborn young swordsman whose past is connected to his

if you like sly 30 yr old protagonists, identity shenanigans, & mystery-solving with gay polycule undertones, this is the one for you!

as for potential shipping: if you like age gap stuff and/or devoted puppyboys and/or "A has idolized B (adult) since they were a child; now A is grown-up and wants to protect B" trope. OR if you like 30 yr old nemeses who act divorced. the 3 main guys all have chemistry; pick and choose your ship at will!

love between fairy and devil/苍兰诀 (2022)

episodes: 36

genre: romance, xianxia (chinese high fantasy), adventure

high budget CGI? in MY cdrama? it's more likely than you think!

please ignore the horrendous english title. a translation of the original chinese would be "the parting/goodbye of canglan", canglan being the main characters. the story is tragic but ends happily!

on the surface appears like an old-fashioned good girl x bad boy love story, but is far more emotionally interesting & 100% deserving of its sheer popularity

brave & kindhearted low-ranking 1,500 yr old orchid fairy spirit accidentally soulbonds with a 30,000 yr old demon lord war prisoner who just happens to be the nemesis of her realm, except she reaps all the benefits and he just suffers (hilariously)

very star-crossed, VERY funny bodyswapping, & with far more heart and consistency than many people assume. the romance is difficult in ways that make sense! genuinely thought my picky ass would not be charmed by this show and found myself fully crying by episode 8

oh, and gloriously stunning costuming. everyone looks good, all the time, even when they're covered in blood <3

a journey to love/一念关山 (2023)

episodes: 40

genre: historical, romance, adventure, political intrigue

also female-centric! an infamous and deeply complex assassin protagonist hellbent on revenge against the people who framed her finds herself making a deal to train a timid princess into becoming a political force of nature, ft. her supportive and equally capable male love interest, his group of incredibly lovable and memorable best bros, a gorgeous cutthroat young marquis with an oedipus complex & a complicated backstory (who absolutely steals the show whenever he shows up), & a headstrong tomboy princess with a sweet and loyal heart

a fast-paced plot that never drags + excellent soundtrack + incredible action scenes + a genuinely convincing crossdressing plot where the female character actually passes as a man

unreasonably funny considering the political drama. i truly cannot understate how Fun this was to watch, especially if you like deadly domineering women who are badly socialized and hilarious, and female characters establishing positive and meaningful bonds with each other.

if you've never watched a cdrama, i will warn that most of them Do Not Pull Their Punches when it comes to making viewers cry. this one has shakespearian tragedy levels of death, including of major characters

you can watch with subtitles on iqiyi, and i'm sure some [redacted] sites also

i don't exactly have a full list of endings in mind, but they would definitely depend on the percentage of school Mysteries solved, and the depth of understanding of the various characters. maybe with one or two joke ones for fun

a few of them would be

Worst ending :

Conditions - no Mysteries are solved. no relationships have passed a certain threshold. Tanjirou steps into the haunted hallway on his own

Scenario - i mentioned it in this post before, but in short Tanjirou gets murdered by the ghost haunting the hallway. the epilogue shows him helping Senjurou (who just started high school) with directions, implying that Senjurou will be the next victim in this seemingly endless cycle of death

this ending can probably be triggered like. Extremely Early. any% speedrun strat

Not Very Good ending :

Conditions - Tanjirou doesn't step into the haunted hallway at any point

Scenario - Tanjirou and his friends make it out of high school in one piece. the epilogue shows Senjurou asking Sabito for directions, implying that while Tanjirou escaped the curse himself, things haven't changed and the hallway will keep on taking lives

can technically be triggered in any playthrough, but why would you go to the trouble of solving every Mystery and maxing out all relationships for that ?

Vase ending :

Conditions - Tanjirou goes into the art room alone at night to solve the 6th Mystery on his own

Scenario - Tanjirou gets ghost murdered and stuffed into a vase by the vengeful ghost of a failed artist

it's repeatedly mentioned not to go alone into this one, so this ending is more of a "what were you expecting ?" kinda deal

Best ending :

Conditions - all 7 Mysteries are solved fully. all relationships are maxed out. Tanjirou steps into the hallway with his friends by his side

Scenario - Tanjirou confronts the corrupted ghost responsible for the haunting and the deaths, and armed with his knowledge of the school's Mysteries and understanding of the timeline of events, realizes that the ghost was himself a student, and that the corruption was a result of his fear of being alone for all of eternity. breaking into a locked locker in a part of the hallway no one walked into in at least 50 years, Tanjirou finds the remains of the first ghost and brings him peace, putting an end to the curse

the final credits show all the ghosts finally moving on, with a smile on their face. with the end of the haunting, the hallway can finally be renovated, and the remains of all victims are found and finally get a proper funeral

now on to Tanjirou's friends ! or i guess what i've been calling "relationships" in the first part of this post. in order of appearance

Sabito

delinquent third year, never seen without his training sword or his mask. Tanjirou encounters him for the first time when Sabito throws an empty bucket at his head to stop him from walking into the haunted hallway

while a bit abrasive, Sabito deeply cares about the well-being of the other students and will give Tanjirou advice on places to avoid or go to, or on ways to get some rare items

seems to have a complicated relationship with Tomioka-sensei ?

(during his research on the school's past and the truth of the haunted hallway, Tanjirou can obtain an old picture taken at the start of Tomioka-sensei's third year of high school and figure out that Sabito died later that same year, taken by the hallway. his true purpose is to prevent other students from suffering the same fate)

Tomioka-sensei

depressed P.E. teacher and Tanjirou's homeroom teacher. met in class, because, like, yeah

distant at first, once Tanjirou shows enough assiduity in class and witnesses a tense encounter between Tomioka-sensei and Sabito, he can be slowly walked into opening up. his trust lets Tanjirou access some archives at the school library that he wouldn't be allowed to see otherwise

what on earth is it that burdens his soul so much ?

(obtaining his old school picture and showing it to Sabito lets Tanjirou learn about the circumstances of Sabito's death, and the reason why Tomioka-sensei feels responsible for it. later, Tanjirou can play messenger between the two, and finally help them both find some peace, although Sabito will not pass on until the ghost of the hallway is dealt with)

Zenitsu

overly-anxious classmate with an unfortunate crush on Tanjirou's little sister. as the class representative, he takes Tanjirou aside on the first day to ask him to take off his earrings, as they are against school regulations

his genre-aware tendencies will lead him to give Tanjirou advice on how to avoid meeting a tragic end, and he has easy access to the teachers' room thanks to his status as class rep

for some reason, he keeps asking for really rare items ?

(while helping Zenitsu deal with the bullying his older brother inflicts on him doesn't do much in terms of solving Mysteries, doing so will earn Tanjirou his undying loyalty, and he will even step into the haunted hallway with him, to what he fears is certain death, for the sake of this friendship)

Makomo

aloof and a bit of an airhead, she wears a unique, hand-crafted hair ornament at all times. Tanjirou meets her for the first time by accidentally interrupting her conversation with Sabito

Makomo has a keen interest in rumors, and is the first to mention the existence of the 7 Mysteries to Tanjirou. while it may sometimes seem like she is speaking in riddles, her guidance will be invaluable in knowing what to look for

why is she allowed to wear a custom uniform ?

(investigating the beginnings of the haunted hallway will reveal that Makomo was one of its first victims, nearly 50 years ago. she has been looking to put an end to this curse ever since, and watches over Tanjirou as he walks into the hallway in turn. pick up her precious hair ornament under a bookcase in the abandoned hallway and come back alive, and you can get a bonus post-credit scene)

Inosuke

delinquent first year, so rarely seen without his stupid horse mask that most people don't even know his face. first encountered properly while Tanjirou investigates the Mystery of the beautiful girl on the roof

initially brash (and not very bright), but with good instincts, tame him with enough food and compliments and he will be an invaluable ally in finding hidden clues and avoiding the very real dangers hidden behind the last Mysteries

the real identity of the mysterious "beautiful girl on the roof" ?

(if Tanjirou decides to investigate the Mystery of the beautiful girl on the roof further after getting Inosuke's relationship high enough, he will realize that Inosuke isn't, in fact, said beautiful girl. going to the roof again with that knowledge allows him and Inosuke to meet with the ghost of Kotoha. finally meeting with her son lets her find peace, and leads Inosuke to trust Tanjirou fully and finally max out his relationship)

Urokodaki

the old school janitor, determined to work there until his death for some reason. Makomo introduces him to Tanjirou once her relationship passes a certain threshold

befriending him is a must if Tanjirou wants to get access to locked rooms, including the school at night time. more importantly, Urokodaki has an uncanny knowledge of the supernatural that will help Tanjirou solve the later Mysteries

Makomo calls him dad, but isn't he way too old ?

(much like Tanjirou, Urokodaki can see ghosts just as well as living people, and his years of experience only pale in comparison to his love for his deceased daughter. once Tanjirou shows enough determination to solve all Mysteries and put an end to the haunting, Urokodaki will gift him with a protective charm like the one Makomo wears in her hair, unlocking a special ending if Tanjirou dies while carrying it)

Rengoku-sensei*

while not a relationship proper, history teacher Rengoku-sensei can be encountered in the library or the teachers' room at some points, and his knowledge of the school's past can help Tanjirou solve some of the Mysteries

he mentions off-handedly that Tanjirou reminds him of his little brother at multiple points

It was funny to imagine Nun having to share its space with this entity. Or perhaps there were multiple voids, infinite territory to be carved up outside the bounds of reality.

"Amon-Ra is a lover of order. That he would spend his time trying to tame the void with an iron fist is foolish, yet I could believe he would make the attempt. As he had done at the dawn of creation." Amon-Ra had pushed back the void before with his light, spun it into new creations when he created the other primordial gods, a place for them to live. Why he would do so now was worrying. Was this entity what he'd been looking for? Or was it a nasty surprise?

Ukifune is one of the yokai you encounter during your time in feudal Japan. He is a traveling merchant, selling oddities and souls. Most of the items on display are stolen, or dreadfully cursed. That's for the poor, gullible buyers to discover, however. A deal's a deal, and he has no business with the aftermath!

He was shocked to find a pathetic human like you surrounded by a pack of demons; and not just any demons, mind you. To have the great Murasaki himself draw his sword for your sake, like some mere servant, was no ordinary thing to witness. He was intrigued, morbidly curious. He found himself following you around, wanting to learn your secrets.

Ironically enough, he becomes terribly attached to this mysterious human reincarnation. You're silly, you're naïve. He loves it. Oh, he'd have so much fun teasing you. If only your horned suitors wouldn't interfere all the time.

"Keep your hands off, filthy fox," Yuugiri hisses at the intruder.

"I should've sliced him up when I had the chance," Murasaki mutters under his breath, glaring at the blatant pervert sneaking his way in.

Diavolo

Since trust is a steady pillar in every healthy relationship, what truly cements the fact that you two belong together is, for him, that no one else in all the realms knows you better than he does. Add that to how fascinating he finds you and you will soon see yourself uncovering more layers than you thought you had.

However, he isn’t exactly sure if the subject of exes is one he enjoys to the fullest.

It was well after classes had ended that the conversation took place, nearly the end of the year and both enjoying each other’s company in the empty council’s room, and you were discussing how different it would be to experience RAD’s holiday festivities as a couple, having gone from strangers to friends to lovers. The topic of expectations was unavoidable.

Diavolo, who was raised sheltered, has minimal experience and believes that experimenting and deciding what you both like together is the best course to follow.

Would PDA be okay when you're surrounded by all the other students? If so, at what levels? Would you rather stay with him from the beginning or would it be better to spend time with the brothers and the rest of your friends to enjoy the celebrations before leaving the group for some quality time together?

Of course, the idea of you having expertise on the matter with a potential ex-lover doesn’t exactly bother him; you are desirable and attractive, so it would’ve been completely normal.

As long as you’re happy with him, he will thank whatever came before for putting you in his path.

But… what? Did he hear correctly?

You’ve never had a partner before him?

Diavolo was obviously surprised at the confession and, almost immediately after, also honoured and flattered. How could he not, when his beloved chose him above everyone they had ever met before?

This doesn’t change his perspective on you or your relationship, though.

Since he was already planning on being your last partner, being your first as well doesn’t make that much of a difference.

Barbatos

There’s a lot to unpack with this demon. From his past to his private life and his truest, sincerest feelings about life around him, everything is covered with calculated precision.

Since he is not in complete control of his life (not that he resents serving Diavolo; on the contrary), keeping so much of himself hidden helps him feel at ease. More secure about his moves and at a higher position.

You may ask to satisfy your curiosity, of course. You’re his beloved partner, someone who he wouldn’t date if he didn’t trust; but that doesn’t mean he’ll tell you the whole reality at once. He likes giving you breadcrumbs for you to create theories and, if you amuse him enough with them, he’ll also grant you little head nods and shakes that could help you put together the truth.

Having your whole attention and obvious excitement focused on him makes his heart beat a tad faster.

On the other hand, you are as open as a book. Blame it on your shyness and the stuttering that betrays you when you try to be all mysterious and suave.

And also, Barbatos is highly perceptive.

He already suspected from the early stages of your relationship that he is the first romantic partner you’ve ever had, so your eventual confession on the matter doesn’t change anything; neither your relationship nor his opinion of your persona. 

It doesn’t matter that the sole reason he’s the best… man you’ve dated in your life is because he is the only one.

What’s most important is that he sets the bar so high that you don’t even think about the possibility of ever being someone else; not before him and certainly never after him.

Solomon

Discussing this topic with him might get a bit intimidating. Not because of how he could react, but rather… You know… seven hundred wives and three hundred concubines? Sure, most of them were probably purely political arrangements, but it was still quite the harem.

He calls himself ridiculous on the matter just to make you feel better.

And also because it is ridiculous, but that’s beside the point.

He is immortal, famous for his search for knowledge, his consequential wisdom and his overall vast experience. Thinking he’s had partners before you (some of them not necessarily human) is the logical thing to do. You’re not even his first apprentice either!

However, receiving your affection might’ve been the best thing that has happened to him in the last couple of centuries, something he makes you aware of quite often, so worrying about his romantic history is pointless; there’s no need.

He loves you now and will do forever, even if things go wrong and you don’t let him anymore.

By the time you’re comfortable enough to tell him your harmless secret, not only does he see right through you, but he will also act like he doesn’t.

He’s sitting by his desk in his laboratory and you’re standing right behind him, arms around his neck while your hands mindlessly play with the golden tassels of his cape. You try to act nonchalant when you force the words out.

“Did you know you’re my first boyfriend? I mean, not boyfriend, just my first- you know, my first. Partner. Ever”

“You don’t say? I would’ve never guessed, MC”

You let out an offended gasp, but he can only laugh at it.

Your embarrassment is cute and he wants to see more of it. After all, it wouldn’t be your relationship without a bit of teasing.

Simeon

The way he loves you is so natural and genuine that it makes you feel like you've been together since the beginning of time. You kind of forget this is your first relationship and thinking about your lack of experience simply does not happen anymore; it's a potential insecurity that eradicates itself rather quickly.

Of course, the fact that this is also his first relationship helps a ton.

Despite being one of the oldest amongst all your friends, he's the one with least experience. It isn't something he has actively searched for, Simeon is not opposed to romance and love, but family has been (and continues to be) a major plot point in his life.

He has raised and trained other angels, fought and lost his own brothers and poured his heart and soul in a series of books that gained more fame and recognition than one could possibly believe.

While a potential partner was always something he could've had, his interest on the matter was never there.

However, Simeon has never known anyone like you before and probably never will ever again. Meeting you felt like fate and, when the time came, giving your relationship a shot was the natural step to follow.

You're an old married couple, except there's no bickering.

Whether you are someone with more or less experience than him regarding romance is not something he thinks about too much. Each relationship is different and he is more than thrilled to experience and discover what works for you both.

Simeon loves and prioritizes you just as much; being your first isn't something extremely meaningful, just a reminder that your story together starts at the same point.

And that's exactly what he tells you the moment you comment on the topic.

summary: Sam is trying to become the Antichrist in order to save the world. He has a small army of angels and demons, he has an adoring cult, he has a work of prophecy by Jack Kerouac, and he has Dean. Things are going pretty well until he accidentally signs Dean up as his Beloved Consort, a role that requires sex with the Antichrist on an altar. And that's when things stop going pretty well. Also, the soundtrack to the Apocalypse sucks.

it has no business being as unbelievably good as it is, but also it was my first fleshflutter fic so i didn't know what i was getting myself into. it's one of my favorite fics in any fandom just because the balance of crack and horror and love and humor is so finely done that you just have to go damn. even if i hated everything about this fic i would still love it

but i was like, okay, just because this fic was good doesn't mean i really ship it. like what's wrong with just a freaky little codependent brotherly relationship? the ship mostly just exists because they're hot

then i read Stranger Than Fiction by nyxocity

summary: Meta-comedy/drama set immediately post-4x18, The Monster at the End of This Book. Dean can't stop wondering why people would write gay porn about him and Sam. Research takes him to interesting places; re-reading novels for subtext, visiting message boards, and a really freaky place called LiveJournal. What he discovers is a sick fascination with fanfiction, more about gay sex than he ever wanted to know, and an even deeper obsession with understanding why people write this stuff. Meanwhile, they're hunting a mysterious monster that takes the form of a person's truest love to kill them slowly, the lines between fanfiction and reality are starting to break down, and they still have to stop Lilith and save the world.

which reads like it's crack, which is probably why i clicked on it, and isn't really. not only did the author convince sam and dean, they also convinced me. i was like okay fine you make a compelling argument

and when supernatural sucked me in this time a decade later, i was once more like well! yeah wincest is fine but i really am just a sucker for a good fucked up brotherly relationship. no need to be a folgers commercial about it

then i read It's the Blueprint of Your Life by queenklu

summary: Sam jerks awake in the middle of the night and everything goes to hell. Well, not literally, though Dean is staring down the barrel of less than a year before his deal comes due. In the midst of dealing (or not dealing) with his impending death, a killer ghost ship, and Bela showing up out of the blue, Dean also has to figure out what’s going on in Sam’s head to make him so twitchy, why he’s suddenly breezing through this case while writing endless notes in a notebook he won’t let Dean see. Damn it, Dean thinks, This is gonna take a lot of chickflick moments.

which is not only one of my very favorite supernatural fics but the one that made me throw up my hands and go fine!! i ship it then!! are you happy now?

Hi hi! I want to request a gn reader who is the closest thing Alastor has to a best friend, right hand man type feel. Like Reader is a sinner and had to make a deal with Al for their soul, but Reader is so honest when they talk and act that Al is all "they aren't so bad." Alastor calls on the Reader first almost everytime and Reader is like, "This is the least worst situation. Let's not screw it up" as they throw their all into whatever Al needed them to do. Alastor X Reader [Platonic]

In which you are the only person Alastor might consider a best friend. Reader is genderneutral.

While you'd sold your soul to the demon a long time ago, you certainly had perks that most others under his control did not

In fact, you didn't even act as if Alastor 'owned' you; you did your own thing and respected his wishes as best you could, and Alastor just never seemed to mind

Perhaps that was a front; no one was certain; all they could tell was that Alastor certainly favoured you

Anytime an issue arose and he was busy, he would leave you in his place, and by god, you never did disappoint

Actually, most people prefer it when it's you; you are far less worrisome to be around and a lot less mysterious about things

The only thing you didn't talk about was yours and Alastors history

Whether that was part of some binding agreement or you were just scary good at diverting the topic whenever it came to what you did in the past

Typically, Alastor's duties for you include watching over his other souls, going to the tailors, or doing 'whatever Charlie asks of you!'

Otherwise, you'd be at his side, usually the two of you watching the rest and making bantering commentary about the hopelessness of the people in the hotel

Unfortunately, being so close meant that Alastor really trusted you with difficult tasks

Were you capable? Absolutely!

But did you want to? No.

Because he tells you so much, he probably goes to great lengths to make sure you aren't accidentally 'letting things out'

Which means no technology when working with him

You found that out the hard way

The one thing about you is that you prefer the easy way out, and as Alastor puts it, you have hidden talent that you are 'too lazy to use', but you couldn't care less

You'd do anything he asks, both because he is your friend and because you technically have to, according to your soul binding

But you will be grumpy about it the entire time

Being so close with Alastor means you also hate Vox by proxy, so any mission involving him is just miserable

Fortunately, Vox doesn't know you, though, so you really were Alastor's best bet when he wants a spy on the inside
